A few weeks ago, we started learning about our inquiry for the term. Our topic for this term is culture, tradition, and heritage. Our task was to choose a maori tradition and learn about the past and present of different things about the tradition.

Rocket Launch!

This term for inquiry we have been learning about rockets and how to make a rocket that will successfully launch. We learnt about Newtons 4 laws of motion. We designed our rocket and did a few test flights and finally, did a final launch. We explain everything in this short film that we made.

My Public Service Announcement

This week and last week, on Wednesdays after we get back from Technology, we have been learning how to code. We used a website called codesters. It teaches you how to code but still has things to drag and drop. Our task was to make a PSA(Public Service Announcement). My PSA is about littering and how it kills wildlife. It starts with a person walking through a forest and drops a plastic bag, then a hedgehog comes and gets trapped in the plastic bag. After that, another person comes through the forest and talks about how plastic and littering is killing our wildlife.

Childrens Book

For the past few weeks in Literacy, we had a student-teacher and we were learning about children books. We learnt about children books authors like Margaret Mahy, Dr Suess, and Lynley Dodd. We read a book from each of the authors and broke it down, talking about the themes and language features. Some of the most common language features were rhyming and repetition. After we learnt about these books and authors, we were challenged to write and illustrate a children's book of our own. I wrote mine about Celery, and I tried to incorporate repetition as much as possible. Here it is:

Samoan Virtual Classroom

Rocket Science! - Step 1, Parachutes

This term for Inquiry, we have some people from the wonder project coming in to help us. They come in every Tuesday afternoon and teach us about engineering. Our goal by the end of this term is to successfully launch a rocket! Last Thursday and today(Monday) we have been challenged to design and test a parachute to try out our engineering skills. We had newspaper, fabric, scrap paper, paper towels, and string to make our parachute. It had to be strong enough to hold 2 hex nuts.

My team made one out of fabric and string. We got a square piece of fabric and cut holes into every corner. We then tied string into those holes and connected them all together. This design worked ok. It took 1.85 seconds to go from the top of a staircase to the ground. We didn't have enough time to change and improve our design but if I were to change it, I think I would use a different material. I think a big piece of paper would work well as it has fewer holes than fabric.

Amazing Aurora

It is finally the end of term 2! It feels like we've been in term 2 forever. For the last day of term, we have made some art that is inspired by the Aurora lights and Matariki. Matariki is the constellation that becomes visible around this time. It is the sign of the beginning of the Maori new year. There are 9 stars in the constellation, these are named Matariki, Tupuārangi, Waipuna-ā-Rangi, Waitī, Tupuānuku, Ururangi, Waitā, Pōhutukawa and Hiwa-i-te-Rangi. 

The name 'Aurora' comes from the Latin word for sunrise or the Roman goddess of dawn. An aurora is a natural light display in the sky, it is usually a greenish colour but sometimes it is red or blue. This natural phenomenon usually occurs in areas known as the 'auroral zone' near the poles of the Arctic in the north and Antarctic in the south. In Southern hemisphere latitudes, the effect is known as the aurora australis or the Southern Light. An Aurora is caused by the collision of energetically charged particles with atoms in the high altitude thermosphere within our atmosphere. Auroras are associated with the solar winds that flow past Earth. These winds flow out from the Sun and contain plasma particles (ionized gas) which gets pulled into the Earth's magnetic pole fields. When they accelerate towards the Earth, collisions occur between these ion particles and nitrogen and oxygen atoms in our atmosphere, releasing energy in the form of amazing aurora lights.

Matariki Book

For the past few weeks we have been learning about Matariki and creating something about it. We had a few options like a puppet show, an animation, or make a children's book. I chose to make a children's book on book creator. I made it with Billie-Jo and it took about 3 sessions to complete. It is about how the Matariki stars came to be. It is not based on real-life events.

Week 10 Work

This week for literacy we have been studying Horror. We started by watching Hocus Pocus then we pulled it apart. After that, we tried making a poster for Hocus Pocus except we had to make it scary. Then we had to pick apart 3 different movie posters from different decades.

For maths, we have been learning about linear and non-linear relationships. We had to figure out if number sequences were linear or non linear. We also had to find patterns in different maths questions.

Wizard of Oz Website

Our Wizard of Oz websites were due on Thursday this week meaning that mine is finally finished. It took about 2 weeks and I am pretty happy with how it turned out. We had to write 9 texases on 3 characters, 3 symbols, and 3 themes within the story of the Wizard of Oz. The characters I chose were Dorothy, the lion, and the Wicked Witch of the West. The 3 symbols I chose were Dorothy's silver slippers, the yellow brick road, and the bucket of water that kills the wicked witch. Global Issue Art

On Tuesday we looked at some pictures that showed some global issues. Our teachers put them up around the class and we had to write on a piece of paper next to them what we thought they meant. After that, we had to choose the picture we liked the most. This si the one I chose.

Cool Comic Strip

This past week we have been learning about irony. We learnt about the three different types of irony: verbal irony, situational irony, and dramatic irony. Verbal irony is basically sarcasm, if the weather is terrible, it would be verbal irony to say 'What wonderful weather we're having.'. Situational irony is when you expect something but get the opposite. Dramatic irony is when the audience knows something before a character does. My friend Bailee and I made a comic strip showing verbal irony. Here it is:

Koru Art

The past few weeks, we have been making a Maori koru necklace. First, we looked at some drawings done by Raewyn Harris, then we drew our own with pastels. Then we had to sketch out 3 designs for a koru necklace. Out of those 3, we had to pick one and make it out of air-dry clay. I picked one with two hearts and korus inside of the hearts. the smaller heart represents my immediate family and the bigger heart represents my extended family. Here is a video of the whole process. The voice-over feature wasn't working for me so I couldn't do a voice-over.

Wondrous Week 8

This week we started a new subject for technology. My group has moved into cooking/food. We will be making bread and pasta throughout the term. For the first class, we made a simple loaf of bread to get to know the techniques of making and kneading the dough. It was delicious.

For Numeracy this week, we have been focussing on finding a way to always win a game. the game we had to win was called take 3.

How to play: There are 21 counters and 2 players. each player has a go and can choose to take either 1, 2, or 3 counters. Whoever takes the last counter wins.

I figured out that the way to win every time is to go first and to make the remaining amount of counters a multiple of 4. That way you can always win because no matter how many the other player takes, you can always make it a multiple of 4 again. And when you get to 4, the other player can take away 1, 2, or 3 but cannot get the last counter, so you win.

In Literacy, we have been continuing on with our websites. I finished the layout for my website so now all I have to do is the writing. I have written 2/9 of the texases. We are not allowed to do it in school time anymore because we will be moving onto our next study. Here is a picture of what my Themes page looks like.

Wonderful Week 7

This week, we have had a normal week except we had a mufti day on Friday. We usually bring a gold coin donation but this time, we brought a non-perishable item to donate to the Salvation Army. I got to help take all of the items to the Salvation Army truck and there was a lot of items. Some of the boxes were too heavy for me so I ended up just carrying the bags(which were still pretty heavy).

In literacy, we have been continuing on our websites. I finished my website so I need to start writing my essays now. I have to write an essay on 3 symbols, 3 characters, and 3 themes in The Wizard of Oz. I have started writing mine for the 3 themes. I included a photo of a page on my website. I put some pictures on it but for some reason, they wouldn't load.

In numeracy, we have been learning some simple algebra. We have had to do a problem every day for this whole week. This is the problem that we had to do on Thursday.

I used a table to work out the question.

Fun first week back!

We are finally back at school! It's been fun so far but I miss sleeping in in the mornings. On Monday, the teachers gave us a chance to catch up with our friends and gave us a simple task. We had to fill and colour in a sheet about how our quarantine was to put into a time capsule. After that we had morning tea, then we started math.

During maths this week, we have been learning how to use python coding to help us check that our maths questions were correct. We learnt that instead of a division symbol, we had to use a forward slash and for multiplying, we had to use an asterisk and when we wanted to square something we had to use two asterisks then the number that we want to square it by. We had 10 practice questions that we had to complete over the week.

In literacy, we have started to make our own website to put our essay on. We have to write an essay on the Wizard of Oz. We have to write an essay about 3 of the characters, 3 symbols, and 3 themes. I chose the lion, Dorothy, and the wicked witch for the characters. I chose Dorothy's ruby slippers, the golden cap of the winged monkeys, and the yellow brick road. I chose friendship, disappointment, and dreams and hope for the themes. I have finished the home page of my website, and the page for the characters and the symbols. 

Was the text easy to read with the background? Or should I change it to one with less colour?

Fri-yay tasks

Today for the Friyay tasks, we had to do one from our technology class and one from our normal class. For the technology task, I decided to design a bedroom. I used an app called roomstyler to design it and I think it turned out pretty good. I struggled to make the walls how I wanted, so I ended up finding a design that I liked and then changed the decorations.

I really like the side that has my bed in it because it had a lot of decorations. The other side is a bit plain because I couldn't think of anything else to put there but I still like it.

For our normal classes task, I chose to draw an animal but make it fat and round. I used an app called procreate because I'm not very good at drawing dogs by hand.

I used a liquify feature and made his body bigger and rounder. It took me a few time to get it right. I think I made the legs a bit too fat, especially the back one. I also think I should've made the tail a bit bigger. Other than that, I like the way it turned out.

Fri-yay tasks!

Today we had our technology tasks again. This time I chose to make a pizza. I made the dough and let it sit for about an hour then I rolled it out. When I went to get some tinned tomatoes to put on it, I realized there were no tinned tomatoes. Instead, I had to use some leftover sauce from dinner the night before, it tasted just as good. I only put on salami, onions, and cheese because I don't like anything else on it.

The other task that I did was to design my own birthday cake. I made it on a website but it wouldn't let me take a screenshot or download it. It had 5 layers. 2 of them were chocolate flavoured and the other 3 were vanilla. On the outside, I put cream and drew some cow print on it with icing.

Friyay Tasks

Because it is Friday today, we got to do tasks that are a little different from usual. Instead of literacy and numeracy, we did stuff a little more creative. We did stuff from our tech classes today. I chose to do a sewing task. We had to get some old material that we had around our house and turn it into something new. I found these sweatpants in my mums room and decided to make it into a 3 piece clothing set. I don't think I'll ever wear the top but it was really fun to make. I made some sweat shorts, a top, and a scrunchie.

This is the second task that I did today was to design a food truck. I like cow print at the moment so I decided to make it cow-themed. The menu has Moookies and Cream, Chocolate Mooose, Mooogurt and Cream, and Moookey Poookey. Moookies and cream is vanilla ice cream with big cookie chunks to resemble cow print. Chocolate Mooose is chocolate ice cream. Mooogurt and Cream is vanilla ice cream with some frozen yogurt on top. Mookey and Poookey is Hokey Pokey.

Cartesian Planes

In maths this week, we have been learning about Cartesian Planes and the transformations that you can do on them. Today we had to translate and reflect 3 different objects on a Cartesian plane. I chose a square, a triangle, and an object that looks kind of like a crown. Here is my slide with the pictures:

For me the square was the easiest, then the triangle, then the crown. It took me quite a while because I couldn't figure out how to use the website, but I eventually figured it out. Tomorrow we have to do part 2 of this and learn how to enlarge and rotate.
